Biography of Major Ioannis Velissariou (Infantry)

Τχης (ΠΖ) Βελισσαρίου Ιωάννης      Ioannis Velissariou was born on November 26th, in Kimi, Evia. He joined the Infantry as a volunteer in 1881. He was distinguished for his bravery during the Greco-Turkish War in 1897 and the Balkan Wars in 1912-1913. He was the man who played the most decisive role in the battle of liberation of Ioannina in February 1913, forcing the Turks to surrender unconditionally. He was heroically killed in action on July 13th, 1913, in upper Tzoumagia of Mount Orvilos, where he was buried. His actions demonstrate that he was the model and prototype of the heroic soldier. He was brave, daring, and an excellent leader. He is revered as one of the most important personalities of Military History in Modern Greece.
